TDU Stage 6 Preview

All good things must come to and end, and so it is with 2013 Santos Tour Down Under. Stage 6 is a 20 lap race around the streets of Adelaide, and is the shortest of the stages at just 90 kilometres in length.

There are Jayco Sprints on laps 5 and 10, both at the start/finish line on King William Street, while the 2 SKODA King of the Mountain climbs will be contested on laps 8 and 12, with both located at the same point on Montefiore Hill.

This stage is always incredibly popular with spectators, and why wouldn’t it be when you can find yourself a good spot and watch the riders pass by 20 times. Having said that, it can be difficult to find a good spot if you don’t get there early, especially if you want to be anywhere near the start/finish line on King William Street.

With a forecasted maximum temperature of a perfect 25 degrees, a huge crowd is expected to turn out. The rear of the circuit always has the most room for spectators, with Sir Edwin Smith Avenue and Frome Road both excellent choices, as is Pennington Terrace, though it is downhill so the riders will be going past at high speed.

Tom-Jelte Slagter will take out the General Classification if he stays with the peloton and a breakaway doesn’t succeed, but he also leads the race for the Jayco Sprint and Cycle Instead Young Rider jerseys as well, so a decent finish could see him win three jerseys.

And speaking of jerseys, when the race is finished the presentations for all the jerseys will be held in Elder Park. It will bring to a close another fantastic Tour Down Under, a race that seems to grow every year in both crowd numbers and the quality of riders it attracts. And remember, it’s just 358 sleeps until the next edition of the Tour Down Under.

As far as a winner of tomorrow’s stage goes, expect breaks from the Australian riders as they try to win a stage on home soil, but how can you go past Andre Greipel? He clearly has great form, and if he’s to have any chance of winning the Sprint classification he needs to win tomorrow. Only a brave man would bet against him.
